Mesoamerican Reef Ecoregional Assessment

ABSTRACT
The Mesoamerican Reef ecoregional assessment identifyed priority conservation sites to meet specific conservation goals for selected targets. The assessment also conducted an analysis of the threats to the biodiversity, based on the conservation targets and developed strategies to mitigate threats and implement of the portfolio of priority conservation sites. This assessment was the second iteration of a planning exercise for this ecoregion, the first being developed by WWF in 2002. The current process took advantage of the information gathered the previous planning exercise, incorporated new information, and facilitated the participation of local scientist, governmen officials, and key stakeholders. Moreover, the development of the portfolio of sites was based on a decision making tool (MARXAN) to help identify priority sites that meet the conservation goals.
