A Conservation Audit, as defined by TNC, is “a peer-review of the processes (inputs, actions and outputs) and, where applicable, the results (outcomes and impacts) of a conservation project, regardless of scale.” Specifically, Conservation Audit Teams attempt to answer the question: Is the Program/Project in alignment with TNC's Conservation Approach (part of Conservation by Design) and our Conservation Action Planning (CAP) process (formerly called "5S")? This assessment is made by a team of 4-8 peers (often including non-TNC staff) over the course of 3-5 days and includes project site visits, partner meetings, and general discussion of the Program/Project's use of adaptive management and project management principles.  Purpose of TNC’s Conservation Audit Program:       -  To improve conservation at both the project level and across the organization through a process of “quality assurance/quality control” that assesses adherence to TNC’s standard approach for conservation project management: Conservation Action Planning (CAP)       -  To reinforce the credibility (internal and external) and accountability of our conservation work by objectively reviewing a project team’s plans, actions, outcomes, and use of adaptive management       -  To facilitate learning across TNC, and throughout the conservation community, by identifying and sharing those best-practices, successes – and failures – that advance the conservation process  Responsibilities of a “Peer-Review” Auditor: Review background information and be familiar with CAP Audit tools before the audit Give full attention and commitment during the on-site activities; participate in discussions Share your experience and viewpoint on issues the audited program/project is facing Help identify findings (both positive and opportunities for improvement) and recommendations Provide constructive criticism (“tough love”) in the spirit of One Conservancy Period of Commitment: Conservation Audits are generally 3-5 days in length, not including travel time. Some basic pre-information will be provided before arrival on-site, but this material can generally be reviewed during travel (please do take as much time as you need to review). On-site days are long, but usually involve field visits interspersed with meetings and working meals. During the three weeks following the audit, you will be responsible for writing and editing a section of the report which usually amounts to about 6-8 hours of total additional time. Costs: TNC’s Conservation Audit Program pays all travel expenses for the audit. Please confirm any out-of-the-ordinary expenses prior. We cannot cover your “time.” If you are a TNC staff member, you should use the following Center for all relevant charges: NEIMAN 198-086-3000-0001. Logistics: You will be asked for basic information to help arrange for hotel rooms. You should plan on booking your own flights (or other travel means); we will provide information on exact dates and times. When you book your travel, please ensure that you will be present for the entire duration of the audit, as the opening and closing sessions are potentially the most critical times we will spend with the Project Team.
