In 2006, TNC contracted David Wooster of Oregon State University (Hermiston
Agricultural Research Station, OR). To conduct a preliminary study of
aquatic macroinvertebrates in upper Camp Creek on the Zumwalt prairie
Preserve. Macroinvertebrates were sampled at 12 sites, including two
sites in the canyon just below the prairie. Overall macroinvertebrate
richness was low as was abundance and diversity of stoneflies. Functional
diversity was also low and communities were dominated by generalist taxa
tolerant of low water quality (e.g., midges). Macroinvertebrate communities
indicate that the waters of Camp Creek are highly altered from historic
conditions. This survey will serve as a baseline for future
macroinvertebrate monitoring on Camp Creek with the expectation that
communities will become more diverse as management and restoration
activities improve the aquatic and riparian condition of this stream.
