From 2006-2006 we monitored the abundance of Anchusa officinalis (common bugloss), an invasive non-native plant species, on the Zumwalt Prairie Preserve. Monitoring was done at 8 randomly chosen sites and consisted of nested frequency monitoring (flowering and non-flowering plants) and density (flowering plants only. We found that bugloss increased from 2006-2007 but decreased from 2007-2008. Across the sampling period (2006-2007) there was a significant decrease (90% confidence) in both the density and frequency (1x1m quadrats) of flowering plants. Flowering plant densities declined from 0.24 plants / m2 to 0.06 plants / m2. Frequency of flowering plants fell from 20 to 4% of the approximately 300 1x1m quadrats sampled. The decrease in abundance was less for non-flowering plants (31 to 28%) and was not significant. Three years of herbicide management appears to be decreasing the number of flowering common bugloss plants in Camp Ck and Trail Ck on the Preserve.
