DESCRIPTION
In 2010 we searched for and documented locations of the noxious weed, yellow starthistle (Centaurea solstitialis) in Camp Creek Canyon on The Nature Conservancy’s Zumwalt Prairie Preserve. Observers revisited all previously known areas infested with starthistle and also searched for the plant in areas of suitable habitat that had never previously been searched. Search areas were predetermined using GIS. Observers followed transects and collected location data on all Wallowa County Class “A” Noxious weeds found. We documented 47 point locations for yellow starthistle in four general areas. Three of the four areas had been mapped in previous years; the fourth represents a new, previously unknown population. When feasible, plants were controlled mechanically (i.e., uprooted by hand, bagged, and removed). If the number of plants was too great for mechanical control, the area was later treated with herbicides.
