DESCRIPTION
The effects of livestock grazing on bunchgrass prairie ecosystems are not well known. A study initiated by Oregon State University in 2005 (Kennedy et al, unpublished) seeks to further understanding of how grazing intensity effects a broad range of ecosystem components and functions (i.e., grazing-food web study). The study includes an examination of soils, vegetation, insects, ground-nesting songbirds, and cattle behavior. Although soil crusts (including lichen crusts and bryophytes) are common throughout the study area, the research proposal did not include monitoring of soil crusts in this first phase of the study. Because little data currently exists on the abundance and diversity of soil crusts in this grassland ecosystem this study was undertaken.
