| Quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) provide many ecological services that promote biodiversity including nutrient rich leaf litter, raptor nesting habitat and watershed enhancement. A study performed on aspen in Wallowa County found 71 different species of songbirds in aspen stands (Sallabanks 2001). The distribution of aspen in the West has been reduced to less than a quarter of the area it once covered due to fire suppression, overgrazing by cattle, elk and deer, and climate change. On the Preserve we have constructed 15 wildlife exclosures to promote aspen regeneration by keeping elk, deer and cattle out while they re-establish the next generation. We are currently adopting these areas out to local volunteers, which provides citizens of Wallowa County a chance to participate in the ongoing conservation efforts on the preserve while providing us with data on aspen populations.
