Natural predators have largely been extirpated from the Zumwalt Prairie and because of this, elk and deer migratory patterns have been altered. Sensitive species on the preserve such as quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) are threatened by unnaturally high levels of browsing. Allowing hunting on the Zumwalt Prairie Preserve can keep elk and deer populations moving throughout the larger landscape. To that end, the Conservancy opens our preserve to any valid cow elk tag holder, free of charge.

The Conservancy, each year, donates 4 of the Zumwalt Prairie Preserve’s allotted Land Owner Preference tags to local charitable organizations within Wallowa County, where they are then raffled off to the public. Proceeds entirely benefit the local organizations. Over the past 6 years more than $150,000 has been raised for local non-profit organizations.

“Thanks for putting up your tag for the hospital auction. Sam is very excited about his first elk. It was a great bonding experience for a father and son. Memories I will never forget.” John Kirkeide, 2009 Bull Elk hunt
