Invasive Plant Management

By Dane Dostert on 11/10/2009 | Keyword(s): invasives; Conservation Action; Management Program

The Conservancy is engaged in an intensive program to manage invasive weed species on the Zumwalt Preserve. In addition to employing the best management practices available, we are tracking the success of our efforts through a comprehensive weed monitoring program. Conservancy staff and volunteers have surveyed thousands of acres on the Zumwalt Prairie Preserve and are enhancing what we know about the distribution of non-native plants and how their populations are changing over time.

In conjunction with the monitoring efforts, TNC employs fire, grazing and herbicides as management tools. Over time, we hope to learn the most successful management strategies. Local weed contractors chemically treat many of the larger populations of weeds on the preserve and volunteers and staff mechanically treat smaller populations. The Conservancy supports regional weed management efforts through funding for assessment and control, and collaboration on research and restoration projects.
