The aquatic and riparian areas on the Zumwalt Prairie provide habitat to many of the native animal species for some portion of their life cycle and include resident and anadromous fishes (primarily steelhead), riparian-obligate bird species (including yellow-breasted chat), several amphibians, as well as the Columbian sharp-tailed grouse. The Conservancy is restoring many of the aquatic and riparian areas on the preserve to improve habitat for native species. Some efforts include removing barriers to fish passage, improving channel morphology, planting native vegetation and using ungulate exclosures to prevent further degradation. The Conservancy is working with the Army Corps of Engineers on a restoration project on Upper Camp Creek that is scheduled to take place in late 2010.
