Laws protecting Alaska’s fishery resources have been in effect since statehood. These laws focus on requiring freshwater fish passage and protecting anadromous fish habitat. The waterbodies that support anadromous fish are identified in the Atlas and Catalog of Waters Important for the Spawning, Rearing or Migration of Anadromous Fishes. Under Alaska law, activities impacting all waterbodies listed in the Atlas and Catalog require a Fish Habitat Permit from the Alaska Department of Natural Resources. Activities in fish-bearing streams not listed in the Atlas and Catalog are only required to maintain fish passage. The specification of all waterbodies that support anadromous fishes is important to ensure their protection.
