The identification and protection of anadromous fish bearing rivers, stream, and lakes is an important function of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G). For these water bodies to be protected, they must be formally listed in the department’s Fish Distribution Database (FDD). The information is utilized in a number of ways. Data from the FDD is used by the Department of Natural Resources to publish the Catalog of Waters Important for Spawning, Rearing, or Migration of Anadromous Fishes and An Atlas to the Catalog of Waters Important for Spawning, Rearing, or Migration of Anadromous Fishes (referred to as the AWC) which are then adopted by reference into regulation. The ADF&G uses FDD information to maintain an Internet Map Server website which provided online views of anadromous water bodies along with fish species distribution and life phase information. State and federal agency biologists also utilize FDD information to plan and implement fish surveys, which could result in the addition of water bodies to the FDD. Datasets in the form of the most recent shapefiles are also available for download from the FDD website for use with Geographic Information System software. The 2005 version of the FDD contains approximately 16,000 water bodies.
