DESCRIPTION
Basic Alaska salmon ecology and current status, limitations, and need for new approaches for updating the Anadromous waters catalog in Alaska's boreal forest, scrub, and tundra habitats. The diverse, remote, and predominantly pristine freshwater habitats of Alaska’s boreal forest, scrub, and tundra habitats produce vast numbers of five Pacific salmon species (semelparous Oncorhynchus), but are poorly characterized. While there is a strong regulatory and scientific imperative to comprehensively inventory the freshwater life stage distributions of each of Alaska’s salmon species, the scale of the state prevents extensive and intensive field documentation. Further, only limited efforts have evaluated relationships between Alaskan salmon occurrence and landscape and geologic history covariates. This fundamental lack of knowledge limits our ability to elucidate ecological relationships, effectively monitor populations, and conserve habitats.
