Session iii: statewide spatial datasets
Gridded climate data are typically available at fairly coarse spacing (100's of kilometers) due to the distances between observations and the nature of the atmospheric data assimilation models used to combine all available observations. Certain applications require higher spatial resolution information and techniques of climate downscaling are used to go from the coarse resolution to a higher resolution. For this workshop, we will overview two types of downscaling products available over Alaska. First, we will describe the dynamical downscaling work we have done in ongoing work that provides station temperature and precipitation for glacier mass balance modeling. Second, we will describe the newly available North American Reanalysis Project, which provides climate data from 1979-2003 at a resolution of 32 km over Alaska. The primary needs of the project will determine which of these products would be most suitable.
