DESCRIPTION
Summary of studies of CAGN and CACW on the PV Peninsula and in coastal Orange County. The report focuses on CAGN, but preliminary data on CACW are presented (no Orange County data on CACW). For both CAGN and CACW, the report discusses (a) population size and distribution; (b) reproductive success; (c) survivorship; (d) age structure; (d) dispersal behavior; and (e) recommendations for further study. Report notes that CACW were observed to use transplanted and re-assembled patches of Opuntia littoralis at the UC Irvine reserve. Concluding discussion focuses on CAGN: (1) factors influencing patterns of dispersal; (2) factors influencing year-to-year pop. fluctuations; and (3) factors that may effect differences in population densities. The authors ask whether it is possible to distinguish habitat characteristics that determine whether areas act as population sources vs. sinks. Appendices giving CAGN and CACW locations and an essay on CAGN in the NCCP are reproduced (others are not).
