DESCRIPTION
Known localities for ~50% of CAGN (~127 pairs) and ~75% of CACW (~282 pairs) were impacted by this 13,000-acre fire in October 1993. Apparently few CAGN or CACW perished in the fire but bird densities in the burn area decreased rapidly within a week. Unburned areas around the fire's periphery absorbed many displaced CAGN but few CACW. Spring 1994 surveys revealed 79 CACW pairs and 12 CAGN pairs in the burn perimeter (28% and 9%, respectively, of the 1992 survey results for the same area). More CACW could remain within the burn perimeter because, out of 470 acres that were unburned or lightly burned, a disproportionate amount was cactus. Cactus in grassland tended to burn less severely than cactus in CSS or chaparral, and larger cactus stands fared better than smaller stands. The quantity of cactus >1 m tall closely correlated to the number of CACW. In 1994, nesting was confirmed for 90% of the CACW (54% successful) and 75% of CAGN (33% successful) within the burn perimeter.
