DESCRIPTION
Reproduced from Western Birds 39:39-43, by permission of Western Field Ornithologists. A summary of published and unpublished information on CACW in NW Baja California, including the recent rediscovery of what may be the region's only large population of C. b. sandiegensis. Observations from vic. Punta Banda, near Ensenada, have been ascribed to C. b. bryanti, but additional work needed to evaluate potential influence of C. b. sandiegensis. Baja California's largest population of Cactus Wrens in the described range of C. b. sandiegensis occurs south of Otay Mountain, from the south-facing slopes of Cerro San Isidro east approximately 5-6 km; the authors suspect >20 pairs of CACW in this area. Continuing urban expansion threatens this population as well as vernal pools and other sensitive resources. Trans-border conservation efforts have focused on species inventory and mapping of the area, while developing a dialogue with the planning agency of the municipality of Tijuana.
