DESCRIPTION
The Conservation Biology Institute commissioned this report in the wake of the 2007 Witch Fire, which burned much of the San Dieguito River Valley (SDRV), including >60% of the San Dieguito River Park (SDRP). The study had four main objectives (condensed here for brevity; see report for full descriptions): 1) Map unburned and partly burned cactus/sage scrub refugia in the SDRV, paying particular attention to cactus stands. Describe the major vegetative components of these refugia. 2) Survey for Cactus Wrens and California Gnatcatchers during the breeding season, determine whether they are breeding, and estimate their numbers, to determine losses of wrens and gnatcatchers and their habitats relative to MSCP objectives and regulatory implications. 3) Describe 2008 baseline conditions for vegetation and wildlife to allow future comparisons. 4) Use the results of this mapping and monitoring effort to inform recovery actions by the Coastal Cactus Wren Working Group.
