DESCRIPTION
Unpublished report by Patrick J. Mock of Ogden (a) briefly reviews the decline of coastal CACW populations in San Diego County; (b) provides population estimates for each of the coastal counties occupied by CACW, (c) summarizes CACW biology, discusses threats to population viability including direct human impacts, loss of genetic variation in isolated populations, demographic variability, and environmental variability; (d) discusses the spatial arrangement of CACW in the MSCP study area; (e) describes the RAMAS/space metapopulation simulation program; (f) provides the results of population modeling under various assumptions; and (g) concludes, "To achieve the MSCP objective of maintaining viable populations . . . most or all of the existing CACW subpopulations and habitat within the MSCP study area must be conserved and expanded by creation of additional cactus habitat." Report also advocates establishing new subpopulations and conducting additional basic research on the species.
