DESCRIPTION
A bird monitoring workshop was held during the first two weeks in May, 2009 at the William Beebe Field Research Station (Simla) of the Asa Wright Nature Center in the Arima Valley of Trinidad. Classroom and field sessions presented the use of standard constant effort mist netting and bird banding techniques as a tool for monitoring land bird population demographics and instruction followed guidelines established and recommended by the North American Banding Council. The workshop also included instruction in the use of point count and area search survey techniques and special species monitoring methods, with additional lectures and discussions covering a variety of topics relating to bird monitoring and conservation. The workshop provided ‘hands-on’ training with the intention of building capacity to enable participants to initiate monitoring programs, offer further training, and serve as leaders for advancing bird conservation for their respective organizations and countries.
