DESCRIPTION
IBAs are internationally important places for bird (and biodiversity) conservation. It is important to understand what is happening to them in relation to their key bird species and adapt interventions accordingly. At the site level, IBAs are monitored in order to detect and act on threats and assess the effectiveness of conservation efforts. The BirdLife IBA protocol considers 3 elements: condition of the site (state), threats to the site (pressure), and conservation action taken to protect the site (response). This presentation explains the IBA protocol, including the scoring system and data entry. A detailed explanation is given in “Monitoring Important Bird Areas: a global framework” available for download from this website.
