DESCRIPTION
This talk describes the International Waterbird Census - it's goals, history, accomplishments and regional monitoring programs, including the Neotropical Waterbird Census. The goals of the International Waterbird Census (IWC) are to: 1) monitor the numerical size of waterbird populations, 2) describe changes in numbers and distribution of these populations, 3) identify wetlands of international importance for waterbirds, 4) provide information to assist protection and management of waterbird populations through international conventions, national legislation and other means, and 5) increase awareness of the importance of waterbirds and their wetland habitats at all levels. Protocols and data forms are provided for this site-based monitoring scheme. Data collected by volunteers 2x per year are gathered into one database; results are published and used for conservation. SCSCB will be coordinating the development of this new program in the Caribbean: the Caribbean Waterbird Census (CWC).
