Has the Conservation Action Planning process been used in relation to planning for Systems of Protected Areas, if not, could it be? Specifically, I am interested in how the CAP process can be used to further the goals of the CBD's Program of Work on Protected Areas.

Doria Gordon (dgordon@tnc.org) in Florida used CAP as a framework for helping the state of Florida to develop an overarching strategic plan for wildlife conservation. This experience may have some lessons to be learned for thinking about the process over a system.

Also Bruce Jefferies is helping the Government of Thailand to develop plans for their western forest complex (19 protected areas in Thailand) using CAP. His experience may have some lessons for you. His contact is brucejefferies@xtra.co.nz

And Joni Ward, TNC's Rocky Mountain Director of Science is overseeing a project with the US Bureau of Land Management adapting CAP to their management planning protocol. She can be reached at jward@tnc.org

There is an entire effort underway to look at CAP's use in Protected Area Planning and recommend ways to improve the process for this application. Stay tuned to this web site as we will post products from this effort and from the upcoming Coaches Rally where there will be workshops dealing with this topic.

Sara, there is some really great work being done now in the Caribbean using CAP with at least six different Caribbean countries - The Coaches are helping them to build management plans for sites in each country and at the same time working to teach the method to country protected area staff.

Hi. At the coaches rally(s) there have been numerous examples of using CAP as a highly leveraged tool for increasing "effective conservation" at protected areas. Our colleagues in Guatemala helped design a CAP for Parque Nacional Tikal, for example. There have been CAPs done for Marine Protected Areas in the Caribbean and Pacific. I believe the Global Protected Areas Strategy group is working on studying this further and distributing lessons learned so email me if you want and I can try to put you in touch with the right folks!
