Conservation Networks A network is a group of people, working across organizational and/or geographic boundaries, who collectively create, apply and test solutions to one or more common challenges. In recent years, conservation organizations and donors have organized networks of conservation practitioners to resolve a variety of conservation challenges and to improve conservation practice and effectiveness. Networks have been used effectively to build capacity for implementing Conservation by Design in particular situations (e.g., in particular habitat types, or to abate particular threats). Frequently their innovations improve the practice of Conservation by Design (CbD), providing tools and methods for applying it in those situations. For example: Members of Micronesians in Island Conservation, a network formed in 2002, have measurably strengthened the capacity of governmental and non-governmental conservation organizations in the seven countries of Micronesia to use Conservation by Design. In addition to advancing application of CbD locally, the network has spawned a number of national and regional initiatives that have increased the pace, scale and effectiveness of conservation substantially. Through the US Fire Learning network, a joint venture of the USDA Forest Service, US Department of Interior and The Nature Conservancy, hundreds of conservation practitioners and local partners have figured out collaboratively how to overcome challenges of reducing fuels and restoring ecological fire regimes. Network members have tested and documented tools and methods for applying CbD in landscapes with altered fire regimes.
Here you will find a collection of guidance, tools and resources supporting the initiation and maintenance of a conservation network. The Conservation Networks Toolbox is a document with an initial set of standards and guidance on good practice for designing and operating effective networks. You will also find links to existing conservation networks that may be of interest to you. | | Resources
