Climate Change Adaptation for California Forests

Literature review, data collection and synthesis project, summer 2010.

Framework for Cooperative Conservation and Climate Adaptation for the Southern Sierra Nevada and Tehachapi Mountains

posted Oct 2010

In early 2009 Audubon California, the Sequoia Riverlands Trust, the Sierra Business Council, and The Nature Conservancy formed the Southern Sierra Partnership (SSP) and launched a collaborative conservation assessment with representatives from ten agencies and organizations for the southern Sierra Nevada and Tehachapi Mountains.   New Lessons Learned Materials:  Southern Sierra Partnership Materials

Mt. Hamilton Climate Adaptive Strategies Workshop

TNC California held a Climate Adaptive Strategies Workshop for the Mt. Hamilton Range in April 2010.  This site includes materials and information used in that workshop (including the agenda, maps, presentations, and even images of the ecological/situation diagrams).  Workshop Homepage

Also, you will find a 2-page summary of all of the draft strategies that the groups produced. Over the next few months, we will be using this summary to evaluate and prioritize these strategies to determine which ones will be implemented first.

California Project Landscapes Climate Stress Reports

TNC’s California program has developed a series of reports that relate future climate projections to the climate history of California’s project sites, and that discuss some of the likely implications.    California Conservation Science:  Documents

STATE and REGIONAL CONTEXT

Governor Names Conservancy Leaders to Address Climate Challenges

While California has the world’s most aggressive plan for combating climate change, Governor Schwarzenegger believes we should address the environmental effects already under way and safeguard our future.

He established a first-of-its-kind California Climate Adaptation Advisory Panel, appointing Dr. Rebecca Shaw, director of conservation for The Nature Conservancy in California, and two members of our California Board of Trustees, Bryant Danner and Ron Gastelum, who both have extensive experience in the state’s energy and water industries.

The 23-person panel will recommend actions to adapt to our changing climate, specifically ways to respond to increased wildfires and extended fires seasons, rising sea levels and the reduced availability of water due to a decreased snow pack.

Western Climate Initiative

Eleven Western states and Canadian provinces are now laying the groundwork for their own cap-and-trade system, known as the Western Climate Initiative (WCI), which would begin in 2012 and could well expand further.
