Climate Adaptation Clinic: Intermediate Homework Assignment #2

Clinic Projects are asked to send this assignment to Clinic leads by Wednesday, May 20th.

Assignment:

  • Annotated bibliography of scientific papers & reports that you have found.
Annotated bibliography of scientific papers and other reports that you consulted - e.g., use the Web of Science, accessible through ConserveOnline to search for papers; if TNC doesn't have access to that journal, you can at least read the abstract and document the citation; you might also contact the author to request a reprint. You could simply copy the abstract as your annotation, but it might be more helpful to your team to write a sentence or two about the paper's main findings and how they relate to your project.
  • Names & contact information of people you may contact - university faculty, agency staff, etc.
Names and contact information of any university faculty, agency staff, or other experts who you might contact for input and advice.
  • List of data sources that you have found.
List of data sources that you accessed - could be a citation if the data have been published somewhere, could be a website like the Climate Wizard.
  • Known unknowns that you have identified.
A list of the "known unknowns" that you have identified. By sharing them, others might be able to help you answer those questions.

Aim for between 5 and 10 things on each list that most matter to your project; use your judgment to prioritize. Pick out the most important or most useful examples. The lists should not be comprehensive, but selective.

Also remember it is easy to get caught up in trying to do comprehensive literature searching. Use your list of conservation targets and key ecological attributes to stay focused. Aim for identifying the 5-10 most relevant papers, the 5 or so most relevant contacts, etc. Also, we mean for this homework to get you started with your impact assessment, so send what you have at the due date, the work will certainly be ongoing.

This homework is not meant to be busy work. In addition to helping you pace yourselves toward the clinic, we will collect, compile, and post your lists. As with your first homework, this will let you see how others have approached their assessment of impacts and maybe get some good ideas you hadn't thought of. Your lists will also stand as a resource for others to consult and add to as they undertake their own projects.

Thanks and Karen Poiani or Jon Hoekstra know if you have any questions or issues.
