DESCRIPTION
The Atitlan watershed is a spectacular and highly diverse landscape of 65,000 ha, comprised of 5 ecological systems: cloud forest, pine-oak forest, high-altitude conifer forest, a xerophitic association and the hydrological system of the Atitlan watershed and lake. The area contains a diverse cultural landscape, with three ethnic Mayan groups (K'ichee, Kaqchiqel and Tz'utuhil), and heritage, integrated by archeological sites, colonial churches and architecture, and natural sacred sites, located in the most spectacular settings of the region The Nature Conservancy has supported conservation and sustainable development efforts in the region since 2001, through four main lines of action: Promotion, declaration and strengthening of municipal parks; Promotion, declaration and strengthening of private nature reserves; Promotion of sustainable economic activities; Reforestation in areas affected by the Stan tropical storm.
