DESCRIPTION
The Dugout Ranch/Canyonlands Conservation Area is located in southeastern Utah, covers an area of roughly 845,100 acres and contains some of the most stunning and biologically significant country of the Colorado Plateau Ecoregion. It encompasses lands managed by a number of federal and state agencies, anchored on a private core - the Conservancy's 5,200-acre Dugout Ranch. Canyonlands National Park acts as an excellent baseline for comparison with adjoining multiple-use administered lands. As a site within the National Ecological Observatory Network, it will generate accurate and comprehensive measurements of soil, air, plants, and animals. The site is situated along the edge of the summer monsoonal zone, an area particularly sensitive to climate variation and changes in temperature. In 2008 TNC and five partners signed an MOU to establish the Canyonlands Research Center to conduct long term ecological studies on effects of land use and climate dynamics in arid and semi-arid lands.
