DESCRIPTION
Bahia de San Quintin is the largest and only intact coastal lagoon system in the Mediterranean zone of North America. It is among the richest, most diverse and most imperiled ecosystems on the planet, supporting dozens of species designated as threatened or endangered. Located on the Pacific Coast of Baja California, this bay is recognized worldwide for its biodiversity and hemispheric importance to fisheries, waterfowl, migratory birds and other coastal resources. It is threatened by development pressures from a growing population and increasing tourism. Like much of Baja California, the area lacks the infrastructure to support this growth, with little recognition of the impact of development on natural resources. In 2007, TNC and its partner Terra Peninsular completed a Conservation Area Plan for the site that outlines public and private strategies to conserve its biodiversity.
