DESCRIPTION
AKFO's Polar Marine Program is finalizing a CAP for the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas, designed to improve marine planning and development of marine resources including oil and gas development, international shipping, and commercial fisheries. The scope of the CAP extends throughout the western Arctic from south of the Bering Straits, to Wrangel Island and east to the Canadian archipelago. The project area includes existing offshore oil and gas production areas in the Beaufort Sea, and oil and gas leases in the Chukchi Sea that generated nearly $3 billion in a lease sale in 2008. The scoping area is adjacent to the AK-Yukon Arctic (AYA) and Mackenzie River Basin (MRB) planning areas, together these three regions comprise one integrated, marine/terrestrial Arctic system, with similar threats, including rapid climate change.
