DESCRIPTION
Located in the east part of the Chongming Island, the third largest island in China and the largest estuarine alluvial island in the world, and also at the junction of the Yangtze River, the Yellow Sea and East China Sea, the Chongming Dongtan stands in a unique geographic position. Its formation, development and evolution are greatly affected by the sea, islands, the mainland and the rivers, which make it a globally rare estuarine wetland that is still continuously growing, extending up to 80-100 m towards the east annually. The Nature Conservancy's conservation work at Chongming Dongtan near Shanghai began in 2006, since then, the Conservancy has cooperated with Management Bureau of Chongming Dongtan National Nature Reserve, responsible for protecting and managing the resources of the marshes and tidal flats; habitats critical to millions of migratory birds and marine/freshwater organisms that use these waters for spawning and migration (e.g. Chinese Sturgeon (Acipenser sinensis)).
