DESCRIPTION
The Mexico Program is in the process of launching an innovative project that should allow to secure conservation status and management for 4.8 million hectares of terrestrial habitat and 4 million hectares of marine habitat in the Yucatan Peninsula in Southern Mexico. This project builds upon our current work and investment in Calakmul, Calakmul-Sian Kaan corridor (both part of the Mexican portion of the tri-national Maya Forest), and a series of coastal and marine protected areas along the Mexican Caribbean (part of the Mesoamerican Reef) and the Southern Gulf of Mexico. Goals under this project are: Make the Yucatan Peninsula the first region in Mexico to meet the country's UN CBD goals and provide a model that could be replicated at scale across other regions of Mexico; Protect critical freshwater catchment areas, reduce the vulnerability to tropical storms and enhance the readiness of the Peninsula to handle the effects of climate change; Support the Peninsula's local economy.
