DESCRIPTION
The Altamaha to Ogeechee Estuarine Complex encompasses more than one million acres and contains the highest quality remaining coastal habitat in Georgia and one of the highest quality in the western Atlantic coast. Spanning 60 miles of barrier islands, estuaries, marshes and maritime forests, the area is threatened by rapid development, incompatible development practices, invasives, altered hydrology and climate change. Containing marine, riverine and terrestrial conservation targets, such as shortnose sturgeon, manatee and whimbrels, the area was designated by NOAA as a Summit to Sea site and is also a Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve network site, as it supports more than 55,000 migratory and resident shorebirds each year.
