DESCRIPTION
The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) have entered into a collaboration with the principal conservation strategy focusing on the design and implementation of a network of conservation and management areas for the Gulf of California (GOC) region that will provide a comprehensive representation of the region's biodiversity and incorporate sufficient ecological connectivity to protect critical ecological processes such as recruitment, feeding and reproduction. This strategy will strengthen the legal and regulatory framework for conserving focal targets, strengthen surveillance and law enforcement, and strengthen institutional capacity. It will also lead to stronger organization of fishers in priority conservation areas. A strategic action plan completed in February 2008 is currently under revision. Climate change ranks as a high threat for three of our targets; coastal shallows and soft bottoms, estuaries (mangrove and non-mangrove), and migratory species.
