DESCRIPTION
The Hudson River Estuary and its surrounding watershed (HREW) support a diverse assemblage of biodiversity, from the world's largest population of the federally endangered shortnose sturgeon to globally rare freshwater tidal wetlands. In 2004/5, The Nature Conservancy led a truly participatory planning process with more than 60 stakeholders to develop a Conservation Action Plan for the 5,300-mile project area. This CAP identified key conservation gaps that were not being adequately addressed by other major environmental players in the region. Some of these gaps related to targets, such as migratory fish, while others related to threats, such as invasive species, climate change, and incompatible land uses. TNC's Eastern New York Chapter is now working with others to implement key strategic actions identified in the CAP, including dam removal, shoreline protection, tideland restoration, migratory fish research, estuary riverbed mapping, and climate change adaptation.
