The IUCN World Conservation Congress at its fourth session in Barcelona, Spain, 5-14 October 2008: CALLS UPON all IUCN Members to ensure open access to all non-sensitive biodiversity data collected through conservation efforts and scientific research; URGES IUCN Members to formally endorse the Principles of the Conservations, joining the almost 100 organizations that have already done so; STRONGLY RECOMMENDS IUCN Members take full advantage of existing global, regional or national level open access mechanism for publishing biodiversity data (inter alia GBIF, IABIN, CRIA, among many others) and ensure that species/specimen level data, geospatial data, associated metadata, and information on conservation results are made available through open access mechanisms; RECOMMENDS that a biodiversity data and information management plan, supporting open access to monitoring and research results and a long term policy for archiving this data, accompany all new proposals for biodiversity assessments, conservation, and research.
