COP8 requested the Executive Secretary to further work on the code, for consideration and possible adoption by COP9. The working paper of the CBD Secretariat on Elements of an ethical code of conduct aims  to ensure respect for the cultural and intellectual heritage of indigenous and local communities relevant for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity in particular in relation to  research on lands and waters traditionally occupied by indigenous and local communities while enabling the indigenous and local communities to protect their traditional knowledge and associated biological and genetic resources .
