Collaborative project to create a comprehensive catalog of GIS data and services for the conservation community. Phase one of World Conservation Basemap initiative.

The Conservation GeoPortal is a collaborative effort to build a comprehensive GIS data and map service catalog for the conservation community. This data catalog includes metadata records describing conservation GIS datasets and online map services. It also include a generic map viewer to allow interactive viewing of multiple map services.

We are pleased to announce that the Geoportal was successfully launched on June 28th, 2006 at the joint Society for Conservation Biology and Society for Conservation GIS Conference in San Jose, California under the domain http://www.conservationmaps.org/!

The GeoPortal is an initial phase in the development of the Conservation Basemap, which will include authoritative geospatial data to support conservation planning, action, monitoring, collaboration, and education. This may include reference layers such as roads, waterbodies, topography, and land cover, as well as thematic layers such as protected areas, species ranges, ecoregions, and conservation project areas. This database will be distributed across many organizations.

The GeoPortal and Basemap will also be used by National Geographic and others to produce web and print atlases to communicate biodiversity and conservation issues to students, policymakers, and the public. Future products may include the Atlas of Conservation in print and digital form.

All organizations and individuals interested in conservation and sustainable development are encouraged to use and contribute to this effort under the principles of the Conservation Commons.
