Reviews of Indicators of Sustainable Forest Management:

Gough, A.D., J.L. Innes, and S.D. Allen. 2008.  Development of common indicators of sustainable forest management. Ecological Indicators 8: 425-430.

  • argues for development of a conceptual model before identifying indicators
  • also recommend identifying representative measures, determining performance from indicator states and engaging in a participation process
  • recommend a balance between standardized and non-standardized indicators
  • social capital identified as a key gap in existing criteria and indicator schemes, but it is context-specific, challenging to come up with standardized, easy to aggregate, meaningful indicators
  • C&I schemes are “particularly weak in the area of social and cultural indicators” – propose adding indicators of social capital and, in B.C., more indicators directly related to Aboriginal concerns

  • 250 indicators selected from over 3000
  • compared indicators to Canadian Council of Forest Ministers (CCFM) criteria and indicators
  • for each indicator: rationale, brief description, examples of use of indicator, outstanding research questions, examples of the scientific literature
  • "particular emphasis in this document has been placed on social and economic indicators. This is because in work on criteria and indicators to date, it is the social and economic indicators that have caused the greatest difficulty."
