Data are scattered around the conservation community.  Accessing data is often time consuming and difficult.  Even when data are obtained, file formats vary, proprietary software may be required, and often, insufficient information accompanies the data.  Beyond the challenge of accessing data, stakeholders with varying perspectives and levels of scientific knowledge need to be able to use conservation data to influence decision making.

TDataBasin aims to advance science-driven conservation by creating a web-based tool to:

  • facilitate data sharing and dissemination
  • enable users to map, graph, and combine data sets
  • foster data-driven collaborations between practitioners, scientists, and citizens

DataBasin is a web tool that helps users connect with data, information, and expertise. Individuals and organizations can explore existing datasets, upload or download datasets, produce and share customized maps, charts, or tables, and connect with experts.  Data Basin:

  • contains biological, physical, and socio-economic data from key partners, agencies, organizations, and users
  • provides open access to raw datasets (e.g., vegetation and  roads) as well as more value-added datasets (e.g. research results, interpretations, and priority areas)
  • supplies easy-to-use mapping and charting tools that allow you to make and store ‘snapshots’ of visualization sessions
  • allows users to evaluate, comment, and peer-review datasets and snapshots

Data Basin magnifies the value of existing conservation investments by enabling organizations, agencies, and individuals to integrate existing datasets from numerous sources in powerful and innovative ways. By sharing data, tools, and expertise, the Data Basin project seeks to generate new solutions to conservation challenges.
