NEAFWA Measures and Indicators

By Arlene Olivero Sheldon on 1/18/2010 | Keyword(s): Measures; Indicators

Grant 1: Regional Conservation Status of Key Habitats and Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGNC)  Due 3/2011

Grant 2:  Beyond Conservation Land, status of approximately 30 key indicators and measures  Due 1/2011

These grants cover the 13 northeastern states (ME, NH, VT, MA, RI, CT, NY, PA, NJ, DE, MD, VA, WV) +  DC, and build upon and implement measures developed in NEAFWA's Northeast Monitoring and Performance Reporting Framework (Tomajer et al. 2008).  Habitats covered include Forests, Managed Grassland and Shrublands, Unique Habitats of the Northeast, Freshwater Wetlands, Riverine Systems, Lakes and Ponds, Coastal Dunes and Barrens, and Tidal Wetlands.  Highly Migratory Species and Regionally Significant Species of Greatest Conservation Need are also being specifically addressed.  We will summarize the regional conservation status of each key habitat and species target by overlaying information on the location of the target with information on conservation land ownership and management. We will also assess a number of other key indicators and measures specific to these habitats and species.  The specific indicators addressed will be selected by NEAFWA members and a regional team of scientists from among those indicators defined by NEAFWA's Northeast Monitoring and Performance Reporting Framework. The products of these grants will address approximately 75% of the indicators in NEAFAW's Northeast Monitoring and Performance Reporting Framework (Tomajer et al. 2008) and serve as a powerful first-step and a solid platform for developing the more ambitious regional measures.
