Species
Glossary
Methods used to assess plant and animal conservation targets - target selection, goal setting, and viability assessment can be seen in the
ecoregional plan (pdf).
Animals and plants selected for the portfolio, in the assessment's Species Results section, can also be found in the
ecoregional plan (pdf).
Tabular Data
The 4 species target and goals tables that follow are in the original report's appendix:
Potential Plant Targets (XLS)
Final Animal Target Species List (XLS)
Bird Target Suites (PDF)
Draft Portfolio for Animals, Plants, and Natural Communities Sorted by EOCODE (XLS)
Aquatic Portfolio
Terrestrial Communities

Methods used to assess community conservation targets - target selection, goal setting, and viability assessment - can be found in the
ecoregional plan (pdf). Communities selected for the portfolio, can be found in the assessment's Terrestrial Ecosystems and Communities Results section of the
ecoregional plan (pdf).
Tabular Data
The terrestrial ecosystems and communities target table that follows is in the original report's appendix and will open in Excel:
NVC Associations Crosswalked to New York and Vermont Community Types (XLS)
The occurrences sheet in
STL Communities with Goals (XLS) extends the NVC Associations table (above). It adds the ecoregional goal for each association and the number of actual occurrences included in the portfolio, showing their distribution across subsections.
Matrix Forests

The methods used to develop and assess matrix-forming ecosystem conservation targets can be read in the
ecoregional plan (pdf).
Matrix forest examples selected for the portfolio, can also be read in the assessment's Matrix-Forming Ecosystems Results section of the
ecoregional plan (pdf).
Ecological Land Units (ELUs) are introduced in the Methods chapter, but without much technical description. Read more about ELUs in the
supplementary metadata for 30 meter ecosystem raster data (DOC).
Tabular Data
Appendix E - Matrix Blocks in STL (XLS) includes some descriptive data based on expert evaluation of 38 blocks under consideration. Of these, 15* matrix forest examples were chosen as Preferred for the portfolio, 13 were chosen as Alternate. (* Blocks 317-319 were combined into one - 318 - in the final results.)
Spatial View of Blocks View block data for individual matrix forest areas by locating them on the map of portfolio blocks.
Western Forest Blocks
Eastern Forest Blocks
Aquatics

Multiple approaches were taken to addressing the ecoregion's aquatic biodiversity in the results overview in the
ecoregional plan (pdf).
A classification system for river and lake macrohabitats and species assemblages, led by David Hunt, and documented in Saint Lawrence/Champlain Valley (STL)
Aquatic Community Classification, “Heritage Approach” (pdf).
The portfolio results, described by David Hunt in Aquatic Community Classification and Portfolio:
Summary, Viability Assessment, Portfolio Development (PDF).
Standard Methods used in the Northeast Division to assess system-level aquatic features can be seen in the
ecoregional plan (pdf).
Watershed Condition GIS Screening and Review (DOC), an elaboration of aquatic planning methods applied to the 3 Ecological Drainage Units (EDUs) in the U.S. portion of the ecoregion, Lake Champlain, Northwest Adirondack, and Northeastern Lake Ontario.
Tabular Data
The final portfolio for those EDUs is summarized in the tables below. Each Excel file includes a helper sheet that describes the portfolio priority type codes.
Aquatic Portfolio Report as of 5/24/2002 (XLS) lists all STL aquatic portfolio examples.
Size 2 System Aquatic Portfolio (XLS) lists all size 2 (small to medium) river examples in the portfolio.
Size 3 System Aquatic Portfolio (XLS) lists all size 3 (medium to large) river examples in the portfolio.
A GIS aquatic ecosystem classification was performed (see Methods). The following tables describe how the resulting aquatic ecosystem types differ in their physical watershed characteristics.
Size 2 Aquatic System Biophysical Setting Summary (XLS)
Size 3 Aquatic System Biophysical Setting Summary (XLS)
Other aquatics tables for use with spatial analysis tools are included. Go to the Tabular Data page of this CD Guide to see the full listing.
