DESCRIPTION
This document describes the experimental design and study plan for the Ellsworth Creek Adaptive Management Area (AMA). The AMA is within the 2040 ha Ellsworth Creek watershed, a coastal, forested watershed located in southwestern Washington and owned by The Nature Conservancy (TNC). Decades of intensive forest management and road building have altered the forest, stream, and estuarine systems of the watershed. TNC has developed an adaptive management strategy to test 3 restoration pathways intended to restore natural ecological processes and function. Restoration pathways include: active management, passive management, and a control. Monitoring is a critical component of the adaptive management approach. Monitoring methodologies for several abiotic and biotic indicators (e.g., forest structure, stream habitat, macroinvertebrates, amphibians, forest birds) are outlined. Monitoring will be critical in evaluating the efficacy of the restoration pathways.
