DESCRIPTION
The Active River Area is a holistic conservation framework for rivers and streams that integrates both physical and ecological processes that form, change and maintain a wide array of habitat types and conditions in and along rivers and streams. The framework is intended to inform efforts to protect and restore the ecological integrity of rivers and streams by providing a means for explicitly considering the spatial area necessary for natural processes and disturbance regimes to occur. Equally importantly, the active river area provides a range of important benefits to socieity, including the reduction of flood and erosion hazards, water quality protection, providing recreational and scenic amenities and providing for important habitat for terrestrial and other non-aquatic species. The document describes some straightforward geographic information system (GIS) approaches that allow for the active river area to be mapped at multiple scales, from reaches to ecoregions.
