The mission of the Forest Stewardship Program in Missouri is,
to protect, enhance, and perpetuate Missouri's forest resources".
The Forest Stewardship Program is designed to promote responsible management of forests and associated natural resources on private lands in Missouri. Stewardship planning and management assistance strive to promote holistic, ecosystem-based management options and opportunities to landowners based on an understanding of the landowners personal objectives for owning and managing these lands. Critical issues that are being addressed through Stewardship planning and assistance in Missouri include, but are not limited to:
- Restoration and protection of stream and water quality through the use of forestry BMP's
- Improvement of bottomland and riparian forest management
- Reduction in high-grading and non-science based management
- Monitoring, control and management of oak decline and red oak borer
- Improvement of forest health and diversity to better withstand potential impacts of gypsy moth, oak decline and other potential forest health threats
- Integration of conservation practices and stewardship philosophy into forest and open land management
- Management recommendations to improve habitat and status of threatened and endangered species
- Reduction of indiscriminate burning and grazing of forest lands
- Development of quality wildlife habitat and forest-based recreation on private lands
