Message from Stewardship Program

The state of Rhode Island is currently 56% forested, with 76% of those forests in the hands of private landowners.

With relatively short driving distances, our Forest Stewardship Program still uses a one on one approach for outreach, relying on the Department of Environmental Management's/ Division of Forest Environment, Rhode Island Forest Conservator's Organization and Private consulting Foresters to carry out these efforts. Forest Stewardship Plan Development is carried out solely by Consulting Foresters.

In addition to the one on one outreach, we use membership in the Tree Farm Program and the state's current use tax program as an opportunity to promote forest Stewardship, for both programs require Forest Management Plans.

State Forestland Statistics:

  • Total forested acres= 339,700
  • Privately owned=258,900 acres
  • Industry=0
  • Government=80,800 acres
