Message from Stewardship Program

In Washington State, even with our extensive federal, state, and industry-owned forests, individuals and families own 26% of the state's forest land.

Forest Stewardship is a nationwide program designed to assist non-industrial private forest owners in managing their properties for a variety of resource values. Assistance is customized to meet your specific needs and objectives.The program is funded and administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service and the Washington Department of Natural Resources (DNR) in close cooperation with several other state and federal agencies and private organizations.

State Forestland Statistics:

  • Total forested acres= 20.89 million acres
  • Privately owned=4.6 million acres
  • Industry=4.37 million acres
  • Federal=9.64 million acres
  • State=2 million acres
  • Other=200,000 acres
