Message from Stewardship Program

West Virginia has the Managed Timberland Tax Incentive Law which provides for a tax break to landowners having 10 acres of woodland or more, who have a forest resources management plan and are implementing the plan. The Division of Forestry has 36 Service Foresters who provide free technical assistance.

The Division of Forestry trains and certifies private sector consulting foresters and resource planners to write Stewardship plans for NIPF's.

State Forestland Statistics:

Based on timberland data from 1990 survey, new survey due in March 2002

  • Forested Land=11.9 million acres
  • Privately owned= 7.4 million acres
  • Industrial=2.7 million acres
  • Federal=1.1 million acres
  • State=200,000 acres
  • Other=500,000 acres

Stewardship in West Virginia:

  • Number of stewardship plans =3,542
  • Acres covered by stewardship plans =603,806
