Message from Stewardship Program

Wyoming landowners are faced with many issues that affect the economic viability and health of their forested lands:

  • A reduction in federal timber harvests has increased production pressure placed upon private lands.
  • Diseases such as white pine blister rust and armillaria and insects such as the Mountain Pine Beetle threaten the health and vigor of Wyoming's forested lands.
  • Decades of fire suppression have resulted in overstocked forested lands subject to devastating wildfire. This threat has been heightened as wildland urban interface areas have expanded.
  • Forested areas must remain economically viable to reduce fragmentation.

The State's forest stewardship program (FSP) provides landowners with technical assistance for development of management plans that address specific goals and objectives for their property. These plans, developed free of charge, can address the forested land concerns cited above.

State Forestland Statistics:

  • Total forested acres = 9.8 million acres
  • Privately owned = 1.6 million acres
  • State = 276,800 acres
  • Federal = 7.6 million acres
  • Tribal = 188,100 acres

Stewardship in Wyoming:

  • Acres covered by stewardship plans = 125,000 acres
