DESCRIPTION
The roles played by the forest in providing environmental services, such as avoidance of global warming, maintenance of the hydrological cycle and biodiversity, represent an opportunity to obtain financial and political support for preventing forest loss. So far, Amazonian indigenous peoples receive almost no reward for the environmental services they provide by maintaining forests. While some indigenous peoples inhabit desolate or degraded areas with little biodiversity, biomass carbon stocks and other features that are valued for their environmental roles, those who inhabit tropical rain forest have much to gain from tapping the value of environmental services.
